Wilderness Explorers

Ages 6-12

We are an approved Open-Ed (My Tech High),  Harmoney Ed, CFEF, and UFA Scholarship Provider!

Senior Wilderness Explorers:

As Senior Explorers, your child will dive deeper into the natural sciences at one of Utah’s greatest wetlands at Utah Lake State Park. Here they will learn first hand about Utah’s natural flora and fauna with options including ornithology, arthropodology, herbology, mammalogy, meteorology, geology, meteorology and so much more.

With emphasis on child-led interest to help guide our instructor’s lessons, each class is unique and tailored to the needs and passions of the class members.

With the use of nature journaling, Senior Explorers go to the next level, documenting their learning by recording their own observations in nature using words, pictures, and numbers. Picture books, storytelling, and read-aloud novels are used to emphasize topics including conservation, natural sciences, real scientific heroes, and survival skills. We will be sure to make special efforts to discuss all of their questions, observations, and hypotheses.

But this is not all. Senior Explorers also build on their already growing outdoor survival skills to gain further confidence. These include developing advanced skills in knot-tying, orienteering, whittling, cooking, shelter building, and fire building. With our trained instructors, Senior Explorers are reminded of safety protocols and given more autonomy to practice these skills.

  • SENIOR EXPLORERS SKILL PRE-REQUISITES

  • Reading - able to read paragraphs

  • Writing - able to write sentences independently

  • Knife Skills - able to do push cuts and stop cuts and follow safety guides

Junior Wilderness Explorers:

As a Junior Explorer, your child will explore one of Utah’s greatest wetlands at Utah Lake State Park. Here, they will learn first-hand about Utah’s natural flora and fauna with options including birds, insects, fish, trees, mammals, and grasses. With emphasis on child-led interest to help guide our instructor’s lessons, each class is unique and tailored to the needs and passions of the class members.

With the use of nature journaling, Junior Explorers begin documenting their own learning, focusing on recording the date, temperature, weather, and main focus of the day. Picture books and storytelling are used to emphasize the main focus of the day, including discussions of their wonders about the topic.

But this is not all.  Junior Explorers also begin developing their outdoor survival skills so they may thrive in nature for a life-time. These skills include knot-tying, orienteering, whittling, cooking, shelter building, and fire building. With our trained instructors, Junior Explorers learn about the safety, use, and care in these areas of outdoor survival.
